Diseases of the Drugs: Introduction

Diseases of the Drugs: Introduction

Description

This course is an introduction into the evidence that even well-chosen prescription agents push patients into disease states.

While Americans continue to break records in spending habits for prescription drugs, our health statistics are steadily declining.  The disease states we see all too commonly—hypertension, cholesterol issues, type II diabetes; depression, anxiety, sleep disorders—can actually be caused by pharmaceutical agents designed to combat one of the other problems.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify commonly presenting complaints and the drugs that likely caused them
  • Appreciate how insidious and widespread a problem using pharmaceuticals to cover symptoms is
  • Recognize the importance of thinking critically—and naturopathically—to keep patients safe
  • Understand the concept of drugs begetting the next disease state

Instructor

Christie Fleetwood, ND, RPh earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988. After practicing as a retail pharmacist in the greater Richmond area for a decade, she attended Bastyr University, earning a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine in 2004. Because of her unique education and training, she is considered “medically bilingual”—able to understand both conventional medicine as well as natural forms of healing.

Dr. Fleetwood is adjunct faculty at both Bastyr University and National University of Natural Medicine, teaching pharmacy/pharmacology and naturopathic philosophy.
