The Ethics of Prescribing a Gluten-Free Diet

The Ethics of Prescribing a Gluten-Free Diet

Description

As providers, we have dietary tools to help heal our patients which include the anti-inflammatory diet, Wahl’s protocol, Keto diet, Paleo, Whole 30, AIP, GAPS, SCD, Low Fodmap, etc. Many of these diets happen to be gluten-free diets and patients are pleased when symptoms improve.

However, without thoroughly testing for celiac disease prior to prescribing a gluten-free diet, we may be missing our chance to diagnose the most common autoimmune condition in the US. In the US we have only diagnosed 15% of all celiacs. We may be missing a core reason why our patients have a constellation of symptoms and grave sequellae despite our best efforts. A gluten-free diet is a medical prescription for celiac disease, and physicians are prescribing it without proper lab evidence, to our patients’ detriment. Dr Shaver will explore the salient topics within the ethics of prescribing a gluten-free diet.

What You’ll Learn

  • To apply ethics in discerning appropriate timing of prescribing a gluten-free diet.
  • To explain to your patient population the issues at stake regarding the ethics of prescribing a gluten-free diet prior to testing for celiac disease.
  • To practice a role-play conversation with your patients on the importance of testing for celiac disease.
